Ethereum developers are getting ready for blockchain’s biggest upgrade in a year: the Dencun upgrade.
The dates for making last changes on two key test networks have now been confirmed in a blog post. Theoretically speaking, these would be the last few steps before officially going live on the main network.
Dencun is seen as a major upgrade for the Ethereum blockchain, as it will enable “proto-danksharding” – a technical feature aimed to decrease the cost of transactions on layer 2s, as well as enabling cheaper data available on the blockchain.

January 30th and February 7th are key dates for developers to run through a dress rehearsal of protocol changes on both the Sepolia and Holesky test networks.

The above announcement follows the upgrade that took place last week on the Goerli testnet. Despite some minor hiccups, it successfully went live.
